Who We Are
We’re Dalzell Furniture: a boutique, family-run business fuelled by the belief that furniture just isn’t what it used to be.
Once upon a time, every piece of furniture was handcrafted from long-lasting, sturdy woods like Oak, Mahogany, or Rimu, with each cut, join, or coat of varnish afforded meticulous attention to detail.
The result? Unique pieces of furniture, each with a story to tell.
Nowadays, those stories have been left to gather dust in garages, halls, and stores across the country while mass-produced furniture becomes an increasingly popular option.
We’re determined to do things differently.
That’s why we take a sustainable approach to furnishing New Zealand homes and businesses by refurbishing, painting, and rejuvenating these abandoned pieces. Pieces that have already been made, with resources that have already been used.
In truth? Anyone can paint a piece of furniture. But with years of experience and time spent studying age-old techniques, styles, and furniture throughout Europe and the UK, we’re able to give each and every piece of furniture the care and attention it deserves.
What We Do
At Dalzell Furniture we treat every piece of furniture we refurbish with the same care and attention as when it was originally created, taking it on its latest in a long line of journeys through the refurbishing, upcycling, and painting process to create a stunning finished piece that looks its best when it gets to you.
You can learn more about this journey below, and the steps we take to ensure every piece is finished to the highest standard.
1. Complete Sanding & Stripping
We sand, strip, and clean each piece of furniture of all existing marks, wood stains, and varnishes. Inside and out. We never just paint over the top of a piece’s existing finish.
By stripping and sanding in this way, we’re able to achieve the perfect blank canvas and ensure the smoothest finish possible.
2. Replacement Drawer Bottoms & Back Panels
Drawer bottoms are prone to becoming discoloured, damaged, or marked with age. As are the backs of items like dressing tables, sideboards, and bedside tables.
To account for this, we replace all drawer bottoms and furniture backs with new MDF panels perfectly cut to fit each piece. We also wax all drawers to ensure they run smoothly and don’t bump, stick, or grind.
3. Paint & Waxes
At Dalzell Furniture we hand paint and stencil all of our furniture. We don’t spray paint, dip, or use any other quick-and-easy techniques that can come out rough or messy. We also finish each piece with a coat of Voodoo Molly Furniture Wax to protect the piece, and provide a soft, luxurious fine quality finish that’s unique to our furniture.
4. Moldings & Embellishments
Sometimes we’ll find that a piece we’re working on is missing that final special something. This is why we cast our own custom moldings to achieve that last flourish that completes the furniture’s journey from ordinary to extraordinary.
5. New Handles & Hardware
During the refurbishing process, we aim to reuse existing handles and other miscellaneous items like draw runners as much as possible. In cases where this isn’t feasible, we’ll replace these with period-appropriate substitutes that perfectly match the finished piece.
